In the 1950s, Canada developed an Independent All-Weather Interceptor fashioned from titanium and capable of supersonic flight. Some proposed variants were expected to surpass 2.5 or even 3.0 Mach. It was computer-operated, incorporating the most cutting-edge systems ever conceived at the time.
My godfather was an engineer & chief physicist for the Iroquois Engine designed by the subsidiary A.V. Ro in Montreal. I’ve heard the stories first-hand. The program was dismantled by the Americans, whom saw it as a threat to their air-superiority. The completed planes were scrapped, and blueprints long-thought destroyed.
Canada was well on its way to being a world leader in aviation. Instead, the once booming Town of Malton, Ontario now lays destitute and fallen into advance decay.
